MAREAS provides flexible funding opportunities to support feminist organizations, networks, movements and groups working to advance reproductive autonomy, sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Bolster Fund
Supports organizations working to prevent unsafe abortion and advance reproductive justice, abortion access, and rights.
Connect Fund
Supports collaboration between reproductive justice organizations and allied social justice movements, including climate justice, disability justice, LGBTQI+ rights, racial justice, migrant justice, indigenous rights, and economic justice movements.
Respond Fund
Rapid and flexible funding for urgent threats, attacks, crises, or time-sensitive opportunities requiring immediate action.
Who Can Apply?
MAREAS welcomes applications from organizations, networks, and groups that contribute to reproductive justice and social change. We particularly seek applicants who:
- Demonstrate strong local knowledge and leadership.
- Present realistic and context-responsive objectives.
- Apply feminist and inclusive approaches.
- Promote accountability and transparency.
- Strengthen communities, movements, and ecosystems.
We prioritize working with organizations and groups that:
- Present clear, realistic, and context-responsive objectives.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of local reproductive justice and SRHR challenges.
- Have a feasible strategy for achieving change.
- Align with feminist principles, participation, inclusion, and non-discrimination.
- Demonstrate transparency and accountability.
- Strengthen local communities, movements, and ecosystems.
- Prioritize safety, dignity, and confidentiality.
Identify and address potential risks and challenges.
We welcome applications from organisations of all sizes, including small and newly established community-based organisations. Applications from coalitions, networks, and consortiums that include multiple organizations are also welcomed.
We do NOT support:
- Applications from individuals, without any organizational/institutional affiliation
- Academic research projects that are not directly linked to movement-building, advocacy, community mobilisation, or service delivery.
- Organisations or initiatives that promote discrimination, exclusion, or violence against any group.
- Organisations whose policies or activities are transphobic, abolitionist, anti-rights, or otherwise inconsistent with MAREAS' feminist, intersectional, and human rights-based values.
- Political parties or activities intended to support political campaigns.
- Activities that conflict with the principles of reproductive justice, bodily autonomy, gender equality, and human rights.

Who can apply for MAREAS grants?
Organizations, networks, coalitions and groups working to advance reproductive justice and SRHR within the eligible countries and funding priorities may apply.
Do organizations need to be registered to apply?
No. Your organisation does not need to be formally registered to apply for a MAREAS grant. We recognise that many feminist groups, grassroots initiatives, community-based organisations, networks, and movements operate without formal legal registration but play a critical role in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and reproductive justice in their communities.
MAREAS welcomes applications from both registered and unregistered organisations, provided they demonstrate a clear commitment to the programme's objectives, feminist values, and community-led approaches.
For organisations that are not legally registered, additional arrangements may be required if funding is awarded. This may include identifying a suitable fiscal sponsor, host organisation, or alternative mechanism to receive and manage funds in accordance with MAREAS' financial and compliance requirements. The MAREAS team will work closely with selected applicants to explore the most appropriate solution based on their context.
We encourage grassroots and emerging organisations to apply and are committed to making funding accessible to a diverse range of feminist actors, including those who may face barriers to formal registration.
Which countries are eligible for a MAREAS grant?
Currently, MAREAS supports organizations working in Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Senegal, Uganda, Argentina, and Mexico. Projects may be implemented in one or more of these countries.
What is the maximum amount available?
MAREAS provides funding for a period of up to one year through three funding streams:
- Bolster Fund: Up to 50,000 Euros
- Connect Fund: Up to 50,000 Euros
- Respond Fund: Up to 10,000 Euros
Can applicants apply for multiple grant opportunities?
Yes, you can apply for multiple grant opportunities. It is important that you submit a separate application for each grant opportunity that you want to apply for, clearly addressing the specific objectives, requirements, and criteria of each call.
Can you apply as a coalition, composed of multiple organizations?
Yes, we encourage applications from coalitions and consortia comprising multiple organizations. In such cases, one organization should be designated as the lead organization and serve as the primary point of contact and coordinator for the project. We particularly encourage organizations of different sizes and from different sectors to come together, recognizing that diverse perspectives, expertise, and capacities can strengthen collaboration and contribute to more impactful and sustainable results.
Which costs are eligible under a MAREAS grant?
MAREAS is designed to provide flexible support, recognising that organisations may need to use funding in different ways to achieve the intended outcomes of their work.
Depending on the specific MAREAS funding stream, this may include costs associated with staff and personnel, project delivery, equipment and materials, external expertise or services, travel and events, organisational development, and relevant core or operational costs. Applicants should demonstrate how the proposed expenditure will contribute to the activities and outcomes for which the grant is being provided.
Who Reviews Your Application?
At MAREAS, we believe that those closest to the issues are best placed to identify the solutions. That is why we embrace a participatory grant-making approach that shifts decision-making power towards the movements, organizations, and communities driving change on the ground. All applications are reviewed by MAREAS Regional Committees. These committees bring together individuals with diverse expertise and deep knowledge of the regional contexts, feminist movements, and reproductive justice ecosystems in which MAREAS operates. Their role is to ensure that funding decisions are rooted in local realities, lived experiences, and the priorities of the communities we seek to support.
