Movements for Reproductive Autonomy, Equality and Solidarity
Supporting feminist organizations and movements across Africa and Latin America to advance reproductive autonomy through participatory grant-making and feminist resourcing.
About MAREAS
Rising together for reproductive autonomy
Across Africa and Latin America, feminist and civil society organizations are advancing bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. MAREAS supports them through flexible funding, equitable partnership, and South–South exchange — connecting movements across regions to strengthen their collective power.
MAREAS is an interregional initiative that connects Africa and Latin America through a shared commitment to reproductive autonomy, gender equality and feminist solidarity. MAREAS is implemented by a consortium led by Ipas alongside CLACAI, Médecins du Monde, and Reprod’Action Santé. It supports civil society organisations working to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights through community mobilisation, advocacy for policy and social change, and access to information and services.
Inspired by the spirit of the Marea Verde (Green Wave) movement, which has contributed to the decriminalisation of abortion in several countries across Latin America, MAREAS seeks to foster South-South dialogue, solidarity, and exchange between movements in Africa and Latin America.

Our Approach
Rising together for reproductive autonomy
Across Africa and Latin America, feminist and civil society organizations are advancing bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. MAREAS supports them through flexible funding, equitable partnership, and South–South exchange — connecting movements across regions to strengthen their collective power.
- Feminist resourcing: MAREAS aims to go beyond traditional sub-granting by combining flexible funding with accompaniment, capacity strengthening, peer learning, and South–South exchange.
- Participatory grant-making: MAREAS aims to shift power in the funding landscape through participatory grant-making, placing decision-making in the hands of the local communities and movements most affected by them.
- Building stronger ecosystems: MAREAS supports advocacy, community mobilization, collaboration, learning, and improved access to services and works with local groups to become actors of change and resilience in their countries.
